Turn-by-Turn Direction Capture in the Field

How to record verified turn directions at intersection POIs using the Field App, and how those directions flow into office tools, reports, and exports.

Key Takeaways

  • โ€ขTap L / R / Straight / U-Turn at any intersection in the Field App โ€” syncs to office in real time
  • โ€ขGeometry-derived fallback fills in directions where no field value was recorded
  • โ€ขTurn directions appear in the Turn-by-Turn Report, Driver Briefing PDF, CSV, and Excel exports

Turn directions for OS/OW moves are part of the official route documentation โ€” not just navigation hints. Most permit offices that require a turn-by-turn description expect direction values verified by a surveyor who physically drove the route, not auto-generated by a mapping API. RoadScope's field-capture workflow makes this verification fast and seamless.

Capturing in the Field App

When you add or edit an intersection POI in the Field App, a turn-direction selector appears automatically below the POI type field:

  • **L** โ€” Left turn
  • **R** โ€” Right turn
  • **S** โ€” Straight through
  • **U** โ€” U-Turn
  • Tap the correct option. The direction is recorded against the POI and synced to the office workspace in real time โ€” you do not need to finish the survey before office staff can see the directions.

    Geometry-Derived Fallback

If you have not yet recorded a field value for an intersection, RoadScope calculates the turn direction from the route geometry โ€” measuring the bearing change at the waypoint closest to the POI and classifying it as Left, Right, or Straight. Geometry-derived values appear with a lighter style in the POI list to distinguish them from field-verified values. They are clearly labeled in reports so reviewers know which values were physically verified.

    Correcting a Direction

Edit the POI in either the Field App or the office map view and change the direction. The correction propagates immediately to all open reports and exports โ€” there is no need to regenerate manually.

    Turn-Direction Chips in the Office

Once captured, turn directions display as colour-coded chips on every POI row in the sidebar and on every POI popup on the map. Blue = Left, Green = Straight, Orange = Right, Red = U-Turn. This makes it fast to scan the full route direction sequence in the office without opening individual POIs.

    In Reports & Exports

Turn-by-Turn Report โ€” Each intersection entry shows the direction chip, a route-map segment image, and a photo thumbnail from the POI record.

Driver Briefing PDF โ€” Turn directions appear in the sequential hazard log alongside the constraint description and approaching distance.

CSV / Excel Export โ€” A Turn Direction column is included in all POI exports. The geometry-derived vs. field-verified status is noted in a separate column.

    Best Practice

Walk the route in the planned direction of travel. At every intersection or turn point, add an intersection POI and record the direction before moving on. This takes about 10 seconds per turn but produces permit-grade documentation that saves time at the submission stage.
